All Nighters

I haven’t pulled an all nighter in a while. I think the last time I pulled one was the My Maps launch, when we added map-creation tools to Google Maps. I had to stay up because there was still a lot of launch-related stuff to do, like preparing press FAQs and polishing the blog post. Not sleeping turned out to be a bad idea because I had to do press interviews the following day. I had to drink enormous quantities of coffee to stay alert.

There was a period of time at Stanford where I pulled a lot of all nighters in a single quarter. It was the quarter I took CS248 (Graphics) and too many other classes at the same time. That was also the quarter I got a C+ in Databases, which wasn’t even a hard class but I just didn’t have time to do any of the work. Christine, Chris and I got 130 points on our CS248 video game though! Luckily our TA didn’t notice that our particle engine had a bug where it only rendered flames on a single location on the screen, which unfortunately happened to be right over the game character’s crotch.

Today I’m staying up late because I have to write performance review feedback for 34 coworkers. That’s a lot of people! I don’t think I even have 34 friends!! :p

The only good thing about all nighters is that feeling of finally crawling into your bed after the day is over, and the deep deep sleep that you fall into.
